This is stop number 1 in a series of caches along the Old Port
Washington Road. This stop takes you to Bethel Cemetery overlooking
interstate 77.
Port Washington Road started out as a buffalo trail used by the
Native Americans. It runs from Millersburg through Baltic, which was called Rowville until 1883, to the town of Port Washington. It was used to move goods down to the
Ohio-Erie Canal in Port Washington.
When the railroad arrived in
MIllersburg and Baltic in 1852 the road became less usefull.
Port Washington Road was the first official state road in Ohio. It was
designated as "Road Number 20" by the state of Ohio on Februrary 6,
1832.
This is tuely a "off the beaten path" tour of this part of
Ohio. A lot of the roads are dirt/gravel and will be tough to drive
on in the winter.
There are very nice Historical Trail signs
posted, in both directions, along the road, see photo. If you want to print off the driving intructions, do a web search for "old port washington road trip"
For cachers who also do waymarking there is a historical marker located on state route 39 just north east of Baltic. It can be found at N 40 26.891 W 081 41.917
The cache isa normal size with room for trades. Please rehide it well. Cache in
daylight hours only and respect the area. In the winter you may not
be able to drive up into the cemetery if there is snow on the
ground, park at the gate and walk in.
