Der Aufschluss hier ist ca. 100 m lang und damit recht eindrucksvoll.
Man findet vor Ort Gesteine besonderer Konsistenz in verschiedenen Farben.
Dabei handelt es sich um bunte Tonsiltsteine und dolomitischen Mergel und Gips.
Die Tonschichten haben von den nationalen Geologen auch einen
lokalen Namen erhalten: Heldburgschichten
(nach der Stadt Heldburg in Thüringen, 15 km nordöstlich von Serrfeld).
Vor 220 Millionen Jahren wurden die Ebenen hier episodisch überflutet
und mit verschiedenen Schlämmen bedeckt.
So entstanden relativ gleichmäßige Schichten, ohne Störungen und Verwerfungen.

The outcrop here has a length of about 100 yards and is therefore quite impressive.
You´ll find rocks of a special consistency in different colors on-site.
These are colorful clays, silts, marls and gypsum.
The layers of clay and silt have got a local name from the
national geologists: Heldburg layers
(named after the country town Heldburg in Thuringia,
8 miles northeastern from Serrfeld).
220 millions of years ago the lowlands here have been flooded periodically
and covered with different muds.
This way more or less uniform layers have been formed without
disruptions and dislocations.

There is a warning sign „Vorsicht Steinschlag“
warning you from the risks of falling rocks.
Therefore do not walk directly to the layers in order
to measure them, just make a guess as good as possible.
