Geocache Description:

First cache we've hidden. Placed by our youngest son. Trying to be as simple as possible for other children to find without too much difficulty.

Hidden in the heart of Aspley Wood. Ample road side parking (along Woodside Rd) good footpaths, & easy terrain.

Aspley Guise is a small village on the western fringe of Bedfordshire. The village has a population of approximatley 2,400 in just under 1,000 dwellings.
Aspley Guise has its origins in 1086, listed in the Domesday Book with 25 families. The name of Aspley Guise is believed to be derived from Aspen-Leigh meaning clearing in the aspen (alder) woods and from the de Guise family who owned much of the land during Tudor times and are best known through Mary de Guise, mother of Mary Queen of Scots.

Aspley Wood would have been an important source of timber and wood for centuries. Fragments of fossilised wood from the underlying Greensand found in Aspley Wood led to stories of a 'petrifying spring' that turned wood to stone. Two of the woodland's footpaths run past Mermaid's Pond, which is listed under that name in a Bedford Estate management book in 1791.

The cache is a camoed 0.75L snaplock container.
