The B.C. Forestry Lookout Station on Agate mountain was opened in 1955. This station was used for six months of the year during forest fire season. It closed down in the late 1980's. Too bad vandals have nearly destroyed the buildings now. The view atop Agate mountain is beautiful...360 degrees!!
A little story about this area:
Back in mid January 1970 a group of 11 snowmobilers were attempting to get to the lookout station. It was around 10:00am and there was thick fog and snow making it very hard to see. One of the snowmobilers, Ray Johnson, missed the right hand turn on route up to the station. He realized too late that he was heading off a cliff and he jumped from his 440 TNT Ski-Doo. He ended up falling a short distance down the cliff where he was then impaled by a tree limb.
Jack Powell and Vern Nelson were lowered over the cliff on ropes. With a pocket knife they cut the tree limb and proceeded to rescue Mr. Johnson. Len (Shorty) Price went down to Abe Willis' ranch and then to the RCMP station for much needed help.
A search and rescue helicopter from Comox was dispatched to help in the rescue. Ray Johnson was brought up the cliff and carried through waist deep snow to the Forestry lookout station.
Just before dark the helicopter arrived, It hovered just above the ground with its rear door open. They got Ray into the helicopter and flew him to the Princeton Airport where he was then transported to Princeton General Hospital. He survived the whole ordeal and is still with us today. He currently resides in Vernon, BC.
The cache is located very near the spot where he went off the cliff!! It is scary to think about what happened all those years ago while standing close to the edge today!
Please be very careful near the Red Bluff cliffs edge. It is a very slippery spot with loose rocks. I would not venture too close. We don't need another rescue call up to here. :o)
