Harbourview Orangihina
barkingmadnz lost this cache at 10 Years Auckland Geocaching Event on May the 2nd stellastarz was gifted it during the lucky dip.
Thanks for a great ready-made cache!!
Harbourview-Orangihina contributes to a network of paths and trails proposed for the entire Te Atatu Peninsula. It will allow people to get access to the wonderful coastline of the Waitemata Harbour, with spectacular views accress to the Auckland Isthmus. The park is home to a number of historic sites and ranging from midden sites to gun emplacements. You can visit the northern part of the park and walk along the coast on gravel paths and boardwalks experiencing the views and wetland habitats. Or visit the southern point of the park, on the all weather path along the top of the escarpment. The lower terrace of the park is an important ecological habitat for native plants and animals, including the threatened Fern Bird. There will be ongoing development of Harbourview-Orangihinga including path development and revegetation. There are at least a dozen caches around Te Atatu so spend a bit of time out West and discover more than a few caches.

It was raining cats and dogs when I went to place the cache!
We encounted a couple of problems with this cache.
First problem: it is rather bright being pink and we didn't want to paint over the dogs, so decided to make a bag for it.
Second problem: trying to explain to mum of stellastarz why we were using the sewing machine to make a bag out of an old tarpaulin!!
After almost destroying the sewing machine came up with the idea of using a stapler.
After a few leaks I have replaced the bag with an ammo box.
So although the cache is still pink it is now nice and solid, waterproof ammo box.
The cache is a 2lt Sistema box inside a bag located (bag now replaced with ammo box, cache now been replaced by a hanging berrocca tube... ) not far from a carpark, it is stuffed full of tradable items, quite a few of which have a doggy theme. Situated close by the Te Atatu walkway which follows the coastline around the peninsula.
At times there can be quite a few muggles (jogging, walking dogs and riding bikes) about so some stealth is required.
You can access GZ from a variety of directions and there is a car park close by: gates open: 1st October~31st March 7am~9pm? 1st April~30th September 7am~7pm
Although you can access at anytime just don't use the car-park or you may get locked in.
Please replace the cache inside the ammo box to protect from the elements and hid its pinkness.
Thanks to barkingmadnz for the cache and ishoot for help with placing this cache.

Thats one bright dog.

Cache now been replaced by a hanging berrocca tube...
