Helmer Lake is a 15 hectare lake stocked with Rainbow Trout, located in the Swakum Mountain region, and is connected to several other lakes by a series of gravel roads. It is a popular starting point for snowmobilers in the winter months. Helmer Lake is a year round recreation site just north of Merritt and is popular for camping, fishing, and boating in the spring and summer months. The lake gets quite low by the end of the summer as it is used for irrigation purposes.
On this visit, we were shocked to see how different one of our favorite camping spots looks as the area has been extensively logged because of the pine beetle. Needless to say, it didn't stop us from having a wonderful week long holiday here with good friends! We have plans to return again soon to continue to explore the many gravel roads. There are not many caches in the area.... and so we decided to hide one and hope other cachers will enjoy the area and perhaps hide some caches of their own.
The cache is near the area our kids and their friends refer to as "the fort" at the north-east end of the lake.
