Conrad Kain -- Canmore Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Scottie: Unfortunately I need to archive this for the present time. If the area is still available next time I visit I will definitely place another Conrad Kain Cache somewhere close to this spot.

Geocache Description:

This is one of a series of internationally placed caches to honour renowned mountaineer Conrad Kain.

About this Cache Area...

In 1909, at the invitation of The Alpine Club of Canada (the ACC), the 25-year-old Austrian guide left his village of Naßwald for Banff, Alberta.

Over the next 20 years, Conrad Kain achieved renown as the outstanding mountaineer during the Golden Age of mountaineering in this country: “the prince of Canadian alpine guides,” in the estimation of historian Esther Fraser. He made upwards of 69 first ascents or new routes on peaks in the Rocky and Purcell mountains.

When Kain first arrived in Canada, he made his base at the original ACC clubhouse in Banff, but later the clubhouse shifted to its current location. Inside, there are a couple of references to Kain:

The ACC clubhouse is the best starting point from which to discover the alpine wonders of the Canadian Rockies, and its staff and members the ideal resource base.

This cache has been placed with the full support of the staff at ACC. They would encourage you to drop into the clubhouse so that you can see for yourself what services they offer the adventuring public.

Please park at the suggested spot and complete the rest of the hunt along maintained trails to ground zero. Please do not try and take short cuts through the bush other than for the last 15 metres.
