I am inviting you to the oxbow lake at Tiszakécske. Its water
surface is about 100 hectares (247 acres), and its full lenght is
about 10 km (6.2 miles) with an average width of 147 m (161
yd).
The lake is divided into 4 sections. Between each section there is
a dam where you can cross even by car.
The sections are numbered by the locals from north to south.
1st section: Locally protected area that has a rich flora
and fauna. The bank closer to the Tisza is marshy. Angling is not
permitted on this section.
While you are here you might as well visit the Reformed
Church and the Catholic Church that are only 100-150 m
from this section.
2nd section: Suitable for national angling competitions.
It is a nicely developed area with information boards, benches,
rain shelters, hundreds of recently planted saplings. Angling is
permitted from shore.
This section is right next to the bus stop (see waypoint).
3rd section: Wilder with rich flora and fauna. Angling is
permitted form boat and shore.
4th section Even harder to access than the 3rd section,
that makes it a perfect hiking area for people who like untouched
nature. It is more suitable for angling from boat, but it is also
permitted from shore.
About the Oxbow Lake:
This backwater was created by nature over 300 years ago. It has
been part of the flood control system as a reservoir of inland
waters. After the embankments of the Tisza were built it was used
as a fish farm. That is when it was divided to sections by
dams.
The large water surface and the reedy area around has a rich
biodiversity. In the summer we can observe egrets, spoonbills,
black storks, grey and purple herons, various duck species. The
most abundants are the mullards, making up 95 % of the duck
population. Pochards, teals, ferruginous ducks and - in the
migration period - shovelers and pintails can also be found. Coots
and great crested grebes nest here as well.
Plant curiosities are the comfrey (also known as knitbone) and its
variety, the white blooming comfrey. Both are know as
effective remedies for various ailments.
The trail that runs around the lake is accessable all year
long. In dry weather you can ride around by bike or even drive
around.
How to get there:
If you park at the recommended coordinates you will be only 500 m
from the cache.
The cache is about 2,5 km from the railway station, 700 m from the
bus stop.
You can find a children's playground nearby.
Have a nice hike, good luck in finding
the cache!
