80 km west of Coolgardie on the way to South Cross
The well worn track that john had followed from waterhole to waterhole paved the way for the coach road, the telegraph and eventually the Railway, steam trains however required large amounts of water on the journey from Northam to Kalgoorlie and return, the steam locomotive itself used slightly more than half of the 36000 gallons of water that its tank hauled.
Boondi was one of numerous Rock catchments developed as a railway water supply in the Gold fields. At the time of their construction these catchments were heralded as engineering marvels, Eventually the invention of Diesel locomotives and construction of a new line to the north saw an end to the days when steam trains rolled to a stop at Boondi to refill their water tanks.
