Geocache Description:

Iron Mine Sports Ground Mittagong

The Fitz Roy Iron Works site represents an important chapter in the story of Australian industry. It was the first iron-marking venture established in New South Wales to develop manufacturing industries after the gold rushes of the 1850s.

Deposits of iron ore were identified in 1833 and the iron works were built close to this ore body. The works operated in from 1848 and closed 1869.Attempts to revitalise operations continued until 1910.

A section of the iron works was uncovered in 2005 as part of the Highlands Marketplace development and has been preserved and can be viewed in the underground car park.
