A quick drive by half way between Adelaide and Broken Hill.
Oodla Wirra was proclaimed as the 'Township of Penn', on 17 April 1890 and altered to 'Oodlawirra' on 19 September 1940 to agree with the name of the railway station. Evidence of the old railway line can still be seen either side of Oodla Wirra via the old earth foundation, culverts and ballast.
It was also the name of an Aboriginal weapon consisting of a notched, curved stick.
Oodla Wirra consists of a pub (the Halfway Hotel), a roadhouse and a fruit-fly checkpoint
The checkpoint checks all vehicles travelling from NSW into SA collecting up to 50kgs each day.
