Geocache Description:

The first stage is missing but can be done from the description

At the Kortright Centre you can see a few forms of renewable energy on display. This geocache will take you on a walk along the power trail to explore different forms of energy. At each stage you will be asked a question which will be used to calculate the location of the geocache container.

Solar Tree - N 43 49.968 W 79 35.525

Energy from the sun can be converted to electricity using photovoltaic cells. On each leaf there is an array of 6 cells producing a typical peak power of 10 watts for each leaf. If each leaf can produce 10 watts, how much power can the 6 leaves produce from the sun? Record this as A.

Personal Energy - N 43 49.966 W 79 35.441

Humans run on energy and food is our fuel. How many kilometres could you walk if you ate 3 apples? Record this as B.

Cord Of Wood - N 43 49.950 W 79 35.403

Gasoline is bought by the litre, natural gas by the cubic metre, and wood is purchased by the cord. How many cubic feet of wood is in this cord of firewood? Record this as C.

Windmills - N 43 49.863 W 79 35.303

Windmills have been used for centuries to pump water and grind grain. This windmill is pumping water from the water table below to create a small pond for wildlife. How many metres below is the water table? Record this as D.

Solar Array - N 43 49.947 W 79 35.293

You have arrived at the solar array. Here you can see panels of all sorts of sizes. Each panel you see contains an array of photovoltaic cells. The panel you are interested in is one of two panels on a metal post. On the back you will find the serial number 0303A8619. How many cells are in the array on this panel? Hint, the array on the panel is 8 cells wide. Record this as E.

To calculate the location of the geocache container, perform the following math.

FF.FFF = (A + B + C) / 1000 + 49.806
GG.GGG = (C + D + E) / 1000 + 34.988

The cache is located at N 43 FF.FFF W 79 GG.GGG

This cache was placed under direct supervision of park staff. Please use the provided trails and visit this geocache only during park hours.
