Myth: Apollo returning from Mt. Olympus noticed the baby Cupid with a bow and arrows. Apollo was shocked that a baby could carry a bow and arrows, because Apollo thought that one had to be strong and deserving to carry a bow and arrows. He began to argue with Cupid and claimed that his hunting skills were better than those of a baby. Cupid then claimed that he had the skills with a bow to devastate Apollo with his bow and arrows. Apollo left and Cupid strung his bow. Cupid had two arrows, one made of gold, and one made of lead. The gold arrow makes the person it strikes fall in love with the next person that they see, and the lead arrow makes the next person that it strikes hate the next person that they see. Cupid struck Apollo with the gold arrow, and a nymph nearby with a lead arrow. Apollo began to chase after the nymph, named Daphne, through the woods. She ran away from him in distress, praying to her father, a river god, to let her be like Artemis, and never have to marry. Her father turned her into a tree as Apollo began to capture her. As she was transforming into a tree, Apollo asked her if she would marry him, and because the wind was blowing her branches, it looked like she nodded yes. Apollo, still in love with her, even though she was a tree, declared her, a laurel tree, as his sacred tree. That is why Apollo and winners of tournaments wear a laurel wreath.
