Geocache Description:

old railway from Fairfield to Mercur

1890 to 1917 the rail was built to haul ore from the mine to the mill in manning then out to the main line.the mine was only 5.5 miles but the track was over 9.5 miles long.even at that.the line was quite steep at a 4.5%.shay engines were used because of the sharp curves.the limit of cars was only six long.still they hauled over 200 tons a day.by 1913 the value of gold played out.$16 million had been extracted. you can follow the old line up to the top gate and wonder what it was like.you can also see where the mill was still some cement ruins there.recent work has changed the looks but not changed the road.I have placed a cache at the top near some big fills that I thought looked cool.
