Geocache Description:

Since this is a NANO, please bring your own writing implements.

The Quebec Central had its beginning in the Sherbrooke, Eastern Townships and Kennebec Railway which was chartered in 1869, and opened its first 14-mile section of line, from Sherbrooke to Westbury on the 22nd of October, 1874. In the early part of 1875, financial difficulties forced a corporate re-organization of the Company, and the name was changed to that of the Quebec Central Railway Company, its present designation. In 1878, the railway reached Thetford, providing an efficient outlet for the infant asbestos industry, which had started in 1876. It is interesting to note that the asbestos outcroppings had been observed prior to the railway's construction. It was known locally as "cotton rock" and the inhabitants considered it of no commercial value. However, its marvellous qualities were eventually recognized, and the first shipments brought out by means of oxen. The building of the railway provided the necessary impetus to the industry, and since that time, neither have ceased to expand. In November of 1880, the Quebec Central was completed through to Vallee Jct. where connection was soon made with the Levis & Kennebec Railway, which had just been completed from Levis, 43 miles distant. As the name indicates, the L&K was the Canadian end of an ambitious scheme to connect up the city of Quebec with the coast of Maine. In May of 1881, the Levis & Kennebec was forced into bankruptcy and was immediately purchased by the Quebec Central. Through service from Sherbrooke to Levis was effected in October of the same year.
