Geocache Description:

This park is dedicated to Dr. James B. Rutledge.

Dr. Rutledge was appointed to the State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners in 1979 by Gov. Harry R. Hughes. After retiring from practice in 1989, he became staff veterinarian at Ocean Downs Race Track in Ocean City. He retired a second time in 1998.

Dr. Rutledge was born at Brick House Farm near Jarrettsville, the 300-acre farm that has been continuously in his family since 1740. He was a direct descendant of Col. Joshua Rutledge, who served with the 4th Maryland Line of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and who is buried on the farm. He was also proud of the fact that he was a direct descendant of Col. John Streett, commander of the Harford militia at the Battle of North Point during the siege of Baltimore by the British in 1814.

Dr. Rutledge was a 1947 graduate of Jarrettsville High School and earned a bachelor's degree in agriculture from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1950. He earned his veterinary degree from the University of Georgia in 1954. He served in the Army Veterinary Corps and was assigned to one of the last units of pack mule artillery at Fort Carson, Colo. After his discharge with the rank of captain, he returned to Jarrettsville, where he entered private practice.
