A side trip of 17km off the highway on a dirt road to a town that closed in 1981
The town of Dawson itself was proclaimed on 19 May 1881 and closed in 1981 leaving a hall, two churches and the walls of the local pub. The hotel was opened in 1883 and closed in 1961.
The buildings are in remarkable shape and worth the visit, but you will need to BYO as the pub is dry
If travelling early or late in the day, I have always seen numerous kangaroos along either of the approaches to this town
