Geocache Description:

this is one of my favorite little holes you happen to find on a trail. you can park a couple hundred yards away. the trail is a little rocky at the end.

walking is no problem but strollers or wheelchairs could be a challenge.

PLEASE READ THE SIGN AT THE TRAIL HEAD!!!

Pettyjohn's Cave is a 6.5 miles long cave (not 6,000 mile cave which has been post online in various places) located in Walker County, Georgia on the east side Pigeon Mountain in the Appalachian Plateaus of Northwest Georgia. The cave is often referred as a horizontal cave, for its various tight squeezes. Out of the 242 listed it is 119th longest cave in the United States as declared by the Georgia Speleological Survey. [1] Though there are only 6.5 miles of passage ways to explore. Pettyjohn's Cave is a very popular cave for local students and long time spelunkers.

One of the most popular and most challenging of passages in the cave is the Worm Tube. The Worm Tube is a long 150 ft crawl, it is very tight and unavoidable to get to the Echo Room and beyond. [2] Other intriguing passageways include : The Mason-Dixon Passage, the Pancake squeeze, when going to the waterfall or Raccoon Room, the stream canyon passages and the Z bends can be an alternative passage to the Pancake Squeeze.

The Bridge Room is a good place to take a rest. You can hang your legs over the edge and listen to the stream that is 80 feet below. [3] The Worm Tube leads to the Echo Room, which is the biggest room of the cave. The Volcano Room is shaped like a large funnel and it leads to the stream passage and the sump. [4] The Over Under Room and the Signature room are also other popular destinations of the cave.

Formations in Petty Johns Cave include: Stalagmites that are a type of speleothem that rises from the floor of a limestone cave due to the dripping of mineralized solutions and the deposition of calcium carbonate. Stalactites are also in the cave. These formations hang from the ceiling or wall of the cave. They are sometimes referred to as drip stones. Soda Straws, Cave Pearls, Cave Bacon, and Cave Popcorn are other formations in the cave.

Little Brown Myotis Bats or "mouse eared" bats occupy caves during the winter hibernation because temperatures are still low but above freezing. Their food consists entirely of insects, mostly small beetles, moths and gnats.

Cave Etiquette and Safety

Kids should never explore caves without an adult.
Take at least 4 reliable sources of light per person (flashlight, carbide lamp, candle, etc.) Also take extra batteries and matches.
Never, ever, go in a cave alone. The minimum is four people. If someone gets hurt, one person can stay with the hurt person while two go for help. One person should wait at the entrance to the cave while the fourth person notifies the Sheriff or Park Rangers. This makes it easier to find the cave again when the rescuers arrive.
ALWAYS tell a responsible adult exactly where you are going and when you'll be back.
Don't run or jump in a cave. Even a sprained ankle can be deadly in a cave.
Don't go in a cave when there is rain predicted for the area. Caves often flood suddenly.
Never touch or damage stalactites or other cave formations. These take thousands of years to grow. Even a light touch of a finger is enough to mar one!
Get the cave owner's permission before visiting the cave.
Take nothing but pictures; leave nothing but footprints; kill nothing but time.
