Geocache Description:

A "Drive by" cache located in Albert Park with on street parking nearby. It is a "Nano" type so please bring your own pen to log your visit.

Known locally as "Sparrow Park" this small patch of grass is actually called Albert Park. In the centre is the nine foot high bronze statue on a seven foot high granite plinth of Prince Albert, paid for by public subscription following the Princes death in December 1861. It caused some controversy as people claimed that renowned sculptor Thomas Thornycroft had got the legs wrong and a rumour went around that he had committed suicide on relizing his mistake. The truth is that the unusual pose portrays Prince Albert and his horse Nimrod "ambling" a type of trot favoured by the pair. Thomas Thornycroft eventually died at the age of seventy, twenty one years after completing the statue.
