Geocache Description:

A quick cache 'n' dash alongside the Union Canal between the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena and the little village of Ratho. It can be accessed by walking/cycling along the canal, by the number 48/X48 bus which goes to the nearby Ratho or just by car as the centre has generous parking with overflow as well, but this can get a bit busy at the weekends.

Your GPS should get you pretty close to the cache, although there is a bit of tree cover in the area.

Built against the stunning backdrop of a sheer quarry rock face amongst the rolling hills of Ratho, this truly awe-inspiring centre was the vision of architect David Taylor and keen climbers, Duncan McCallum and Rab Anderson. Their vision was realised in this magnificent building with keen attention to detail and in-keeping with the natural world outside.

Having fallen into financial difficulties in 2005, the City of Edinburgh Council rescued the centre with a promise to continue the original 'vision' and asked not-for-profit trust, Edinburgh Leisure, to manage the centre on their behalf.

The centre closed in August 2006 to allow a substantial £6m refurbishment and completion of many of the building works.

To mark this new stage in the venue’s history, it has also had a change of name and fully re-opened as the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena, Ratho on Friday 25 May 2007.
