Geocache Description:

A picturesque racecourse with a picnic atmosphere....

The Clare Races is an iconic South Australian racing event. Held in the Clare Valley, these races are set in one of the most famous wine producing districts in Australia. The town itself – Clare – is located 140 kilometres north of Adelaide.

Clare is not such a big town population wise (i.e. under 9000) but it surely is big on horse racing action. In terms of its history, racing began in the 1880s and started on some properties within the local district. The site of the racecourse today was bought by the Clare Racing Club in 1889.

There are four annual events held at the Clare Races. Three of these include the Clare Valley Cup Day; the Clare Valley Ladies Race Day; and, the Clare Valley Easter Racing. The Clare Races are certainly a social event that brings the entire surrounding communities together.

Clare Valley Racing Club is situated at the Clare Racecourse which has a history dating back to 1889.
