Geocache Description:

Casper Formation Petrified Sand Dunes

About 20 miles S of Laramie, this is a nice after work trip. Locating the cache requires some hiking over the rocks. I first came here 20 years ago or so, during a UW geomorpholgy field trip with Prof Brainard Mears. Based upon the cross bedding, geomorphologists ( a type of specialized geologist that studies landforms) have figured out that this once was (several hundred million years ago) a desert filled with sand dunes that are now cemented together and have weathered into these fantastic shapes.
The really cool area on the other side of the fence is private land. Years ago I got permission to walk over there, but I think the property has changed hands since then. Down the road (toward colorado) is where the ranch house is located and you need to ask them if you want to wander through the maze on the other side of the road. If you continue down the road you will see chimney rock ( also known as camel rock on some maps) right at the Wyo-Colorado border. The road will eventually hook up to Wy 10 and take you either to chambers lake in Colorado or Woods Landing, if you stay to the right. A net work of roads to the left will take you boulderridge and/or cherokee park in Colorado. A delightful trip unknown to most excepting longtime locals. There are a few archeological treasurers in the area. Please don't carve on the rocks and deface these fragile records from the past.

The local land owners work hard to make a living in this hostile (in the winter) enviroment. Respect their rights and take care of the land if you visit. You may have noticed few no-tresspaaing signs in the area, and its best to keep it that way. I have seen mountain lion tracks in the area. They look like big dog tracks, but on flat ground the claws are retracted. That was maybe 5 years ago. Enjoy!

Congrats to doglover3pups FTF !
