A strange, magnificent landscape. Hot lava coming into contact with the water and the wet environment produced terrible explosions.
Nothing from this scary history remains today. The tourist can take a lovely walk and enjoy the friendly, yet interesting landscape.
Hydormagmatic volcanoes (tuff rings, tuff cones and maars) are common on land and shallow seas. They are produced during the explosive interaction of magma with water or wet sediments.
Tuff rings consist of a shallow crater with a large width, near the ground level and are surrounded by low relief, while the tuff cones have higher profiles and steeper slopes.
Various eruption intensities, explosion styles and depositional processes lead either the formation of the ring or the cone morphology. The interaction between the magma and the water, the quantity and the proprieties of the interacting fluids play an important role in this process.
About a dozen hydromagmatic volcanoes exist on the Island of Jeju.
The Yongmeori tuff ring complex consists of three layers originating from three different source vents. The first source vent is supposed to lie somewhere on the east of the peninsula; the second one was located beyond the shore line to the north-east while the third source vent site lies a few hundred meters east from the southern tip of Yongmeori.
In order to log the cache you have to read and understand the information panels regarding the geology of this area. There are a few of them. Then do the following tasks:
- Send me by email the answer the following question: "How many years ago was the Yongmeori tuff ring formed?"
- On the information panel existing at N 33° 14.092' E 126° 18.869' there is a map indicating the area that can be visited. Which is the colour of the dot labeled "We are here" on that map?"
- Take a picture with you and your GPS and with the Sanbangsan dome. Please don't forget to smile! Upload the picture together with your log (this final task is optional but I would particularly appreciate if you would do so).
You don't have to enter the paid area of the coast in order to log the cache. However we strongly advise you to do so if you want to enjoy a very interesting landscape.
