This cache, JOHN MUIR, BOUNCY BOG refers to the expansive wetland areas to the East, South and West of the Lake Ennis. This should be an easy find near the parking area. Watch for muggles.
This cache is an introduction to the John Muir Park area and it's wonderful attributes. Other caches in the area are not allowed as this is a State Natural area but hopefully cachers will take the 2 1/2 mile walk around the trail and enjoy this area of unique biodiversity.
The Ice Age trail also goes through this area and can be accessed at the parking area.
John Muir is a famous conservationalist known as the father of the National Park system and founding father of the modern conservation movement. Muir convinced President Teddy Roosevelt to protect lands and helped preserve Yosemite, Sequoia, Grand Canyon, and Mount Ranier as National Parks. He was the founder of the Sierra Club. 2010 is the year of John Muir in Marquette County.
Muir was born in Scotland, but immigrated to the United States at age 11 and was raised in the area of Marquette County’s Muir Park and the Muir Park State Natural Area. This area was called Fountain Lake Farm and is now Ennis Lake. This area was was declared a State Natural Area in 1972. The park is accessed off Hy F, South of Montello and has bathrooms, picnic areas.
Muir Park contains a variety of upland and wetland communities surrounding 30 acre Ennis Lake, a spring fed kettle lake with a marl bottom. The area around the lake is diverse including a rich fen, a sedge meadow, an open bog, northern wet forest with tamarack trees, southern dry forest with oaks and mesic prairies.
FEATURES OF MUIR PARK
Fen is a type of wetland with a flat lowland inland area of nutrient filled marshy land. Fens are associated with glacial moraine
Bog is an wet area of spongy marshy ground consisting of accumulated decomposing plant material with acidic peat and moss
Marl is a mixture of lime rich mud made of clay and calcium carbonate formed under fresh water
Sedge meadow is a large expanse of wetland with an interspersion of open water and vegetation. These are common in glaciated areas.
Wet mesic prairie is an open herbaceous plant community made of grasses and forbs
Oak Woodlands are dense woodlots with mature canopy trees. These are often surrounded by oak openings with savanna landscape with tree and shrub mix.
Northern wet forest is a community which includes tamaracks and moisture loving shrubs like willows.
Also enjoy the expansive bird life around the park which may include woodcocks, bobolinks, red headed woodpeckers, orioles and many sparrows
