Geocache Description:

Elevation 236.7 m.

Duchesnay Falls is located just west of North Bay along Hwy 17 on Duchesnay Creek. Like many of the waterfalls on the Canadian Shield, this is a long cascade consisting of many drops and several twists and turns. The two largest drops are each around 15 feet high.

Duchesney Falls are part of a 70 meter high Escartment that surounds North Bay. From its beginnings as a settlement of the Nipissing Indians, North Bay has been a transportation centre. North Bay lies on the Route of the Voyageurs; a famed network of rivers and waterways that leads to the interior of North America, along which many legendary explorers traveled in search of fame and fortune. The Ottawa and Mattawa River waterway, explored by Samuel du Champlain in 1615, follows an ancient fault in the Canadian Shield that now forms the backdrop from urban North Bay, which is known as the North Bay escarpment. This escarpment became a barrier to the construction of a transcontinental railway, the Canadian Pacific Railway, and the railway’s selected route hugged the shores of Lake Nipissing to avoid this topographic constraint.

In geomorphology, an escarpment is a transition zone between different physiogeographic provinces that involves a sharp, steep elevation differential, characterized by a cliff or steep slope.

In this case water has been added to the equation and a pristine set of waterfalls is formed. You can see in the above Topo map the long escarpment ridge that splits North Bay in to two separate elevations.

Logging requirements:
1.Take a photo of either your self or your GPS standing infront of the falls, and include it with your log entry.
2.Attend the below waypoint. At that location there will be a cabinet. Email me the purpose the cabinet has in relation to the water falls.
3. In your email include your estimation of the distance from one side of the river to the other at its wides part.

Above is a map of the trail in the area.
