Geocache Description:

First I would suggest a flashlight. You don't have to have one but it would make things a whole lot easier if you had one. You are looking for a lock n lock tucked away in a very nice crop of large rocks just waiting to be harvested.

The day started with 5 of us (WVTim, WVGrammy, dlenard5, and both GR8caches) planning to place many caches on this trail. We wanted everyone to be able to find these. After all the hike is trying enough. So we each took turns placing and scouting locations. WVTim placed Woodpecker Tree. Then dlenard5 then placed a cache and I placed the next one. This happened over and over again sometimes not in the same order as sometimes it was based on the location and/or the container. We would even use the Waypoint Averaging feature on all 3 GPS's and then average the the final coordinates. We think the coordinates should be very accurate but as we learned even the exact same 2 models of GPS are different in readings placed less than a foot apart. Then there is the tree cover and rock valleys to contend with but all in all you should not have any trouble finding these caches.

So we approached this location and knew it was ripe for a cache placement. As we entered we knew it was to be the spot. We each thought it could be a bears den with the way the leaves are compacted and the path is worn. As you go deeper in you will feel the cold escaping from somewhere deeper within. This begged for a slow approach and we were totally amazed at how large the area is and wonder just how far it really goes. This is an amazing spot. Maybe I should have called this cache Bears Den? Be sure to tell us what you think it is.

This place brought back memories of another great bear talking about his natural habitat. Fozzie: Ahh, a bear in his natural habitat - a Studebaker.

Most importantly we hope you enjoy your hiking time out here and having a few caches just makes it all the better. Be sure to take the time as you rest from some of the uphill climbs to stop and smell and look around and to listen. It should be very refreshing and energizing.

The Tuscarora Trail is challenging, the SCENERY IS MAGNIFICENT and it's a beautiful natural setting. Several caches have been placed along this trail in the Berkeley and Morgan County area.

The Tuscarora Trail runs about 250 miles, connecting the Appalachian Trail west of Harrisburg, Pa., to the Appalachian Trail south of Front Royal, Va., in Shenandoah National Park.
The Tuscarora/Great Eastern Trail relocation through beautiful Devils Nose Canyon, in Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area, has just recently open. The new Tuscarora Trail runs from Spruce Pine Hollow Road thru the Devils Nose Area to Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area. Hiking from Spruce Pine Hollow to the Devil’s Nose Parking Area is approximately 3.5 miles. You will experience a total elevation change of about 1600 Ft.
Hikers/Caches will have a couple of choices. (1) Hiker/Cachers can park at either Devil's Nose Parking area or park at the Spruce Pine Hollow Park on Route 9 or (2) the other option would be with a partner you can leave a vehicle at each location and hike one way.

The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC) has been working on the relocation for (4) four years. Improvements will continue during 2010. A new bridge over Meadow Branch is planned for later in the year.

To see a map of the new trail the PATC Newsletter can be accessed at (visit link) with the Tuscarora Trail info on page 4. A separate map shows the trail relocation. Many thanks to the PATC for their tireless efforts to improve this trail.
The trail consists of painted BLUE blazes on trees.

If you are entering from Spruce Pine Hollow parking area follow the white blazed trail from the south side of the Park a short distance to the Tuscarora Trail along the Meadow Branch creek. The Tuscarora Trail heading south immediately crosses the creek.

The trail climbs steadily through one of Morgan County’s most beautiful spruce forests and continues uphill along some dirt roads and past a few houses. A very steep climb up the northern end of Sleepy Creek Mountain follows. From here the trail enters Sleepy Creek WMA and follows the crest of Sleepy Creek Mountain along the Berkeley/Morgan county line until it descends the eastern slope to the next access point at Sleepy Creek Lake.

There are many interesting features along the new trail. Hiking from the north, there is a beautiful view of the Tuscarora Mountain to the north in Pennsylvania, interesting rock formations as well as cliff views of Meadow Branch in the canyon below, and the interesting change from deciduous trees with mountain laurel (May blooms) to hemlocks and rhododendron (June blooms) when descending into the cooler Devils Nose Canyon. The white- blazed Fisherman’s Trail leads into a less accessible area should you wish to spend more time in the canyon.
