Geocache Description:


Located on the Mesabi Trail -Trezona Loop which runs on the edge of Ely,MN. It is a non-motorized access. Your GPS might lose its accuracy in here and you probably will have to rely ultimately on your caching experience and geo-sense. BYOP

There were five mines that collapsed to form Miners Lake. When the mining stopped and the pumps, which kept the water out of the mines, were shut off and the tunnels were allowed to fill with water.
The mines were the Chandler (north and south), the Pioneer (A and B), the Zenith (A and B), the Sibley, and the Savoy.

The SAVOY MINE was started in 1908, by J.G. Brown, who quickly sold it to the Oliver Mining Company. The first shipment of iron ore was in 1899, and by the time it closed, in 1916, 2 million tons of ore had shipped from this mine.
