Geocache Description:

The Libby, McNeil & Libby Fruit and Vegetable Cannery (affectionately called “The Cannery”) was built in 1912 and added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1982. The Cannery ceased cannery operations in about 1980.

The Cannery complex is a series of nine separate brick buildings designed by Washington Miller and A.C. Rhoads with an architectural style unique to large industrial plants at the time. The three founders, A.A. Libby, Archibald McNeill, and Charles Libby founded the international company which helped made Sacramento the “canning center of the west”.

The 310,000-square-foot complex was rehabilitated during the 1980’s using the Federal Tax Credits program and is now occupied by a few State of California departments and a health club. The Cannery was owned for many years by Buzz Oates, Angelo K. Tsakopoulos, Rick Massie and others

This Sacramento city-central location is becoming a favorite of local developers and The Cannery was recently purchased by Mark Friedman for an estimated $40 million. Recently rumors were swirling that Freidman would develop the complex into a modern, mixed-use development of residential lofts, small retail venues and office space.

Until then, enjoy this old picturesque brick building and envision what it would have been like back in its prime. If you have any stories of this building, please share them in your log.

About this cache:

The cache is within a few blocks of light rail and an easy hike from the 29th Street station. If you must drive, free parking is available directly across the street at the US Post Office. Please use caution when using the crosswalk.

Please stay on the public sidewalk while searching for and accessing the cache.

The GZ has a high degree of muggle activity between 8am and 5pm, Monday thru Friday so please use care to protect the cache. In addition to the cache, there’s a small number of decoy caches nearby, each with a penalty deduction. Penalty points are higher as you move farther away from the GZ.

Logging your visit:

Please keep score of your find. This is optional, but should be fun. Then enter your score on the first line of your log.

Score your find as follows (Optional):

Starting with a perfect score of 100, deduct any penalty points you received by finding decoys.

Add extra credit as follows:
One point for leaving one or more marbles.
Two points for taking Light Rail and walking to the GZ
Three points for leaving a micro-Geocoin
Four points for a 9pm to 5am find.
Five points for leaving a steely.

For example:
If you grabbed two decoys, one with 5 penalty points and one with 10 penalty points, and dropped off one micro-Geocoin and two marbles, your score will be 89 (100 -5 -10 +3 +1), which you'd place on the first line of your log. Again, scoring is optional, but it would be fun to know who is stumbles upon the decoys, and who is precise.

Please avoid giving away any clues in your log and enjoy the old building. She'll be 100 yrs old soon.
