Geocache Description:

Haven’t you always wondered what happens to all that rubbish?
Hasn't the local landfill always been on your places to go, things to see list? Here's your chance.

If you’re a Chester resident , all your non-recycled rubbish is sent here, to the Gowy Landfill Site.

The UK produces more than 434 million tonnes of waste every year. This rate of rubbish generation would fill the Albert Hall in London in less than 2 hours! At the present rate we could run out of landfill space in the next 5 – 10 years!

But it’s not all doom and gloom.

The lovely Gowy Woodland Park is built on what was once part of the Gowy landfill. It has lots of flat walks with woodland and a small river running through it. It’s one of the best dog-walks in Chester. The park is being expanded still further and offers good paths to walk on as well as some nice riverside walks.

The Scenery can be beautiful (when not looking at the landfill) and there is lots to see – from the swans on the river to the cows/sheep in the field. There are 2 pubs within a short distance of the site – both have nice beer gardens so you can enjoy a drink while your dog can relax after a nice walk.

The cache is small and "camoflaged" and located just off the paths.
There's room for small TBs and swaps (recycled ones please!)
There's some parking available on Hassals lane or better still at the NagsHead pub.

The area is part of an ambitious project which is working to restore, recreate and reconnect wetlands in the River Gowy and River Mersey corridors creating a network of wetland habitats to benefit barn owls, lapwings, water voles, otters and much more.

The Gowy Landfill Site also provides a composting facility for the 12,000 tonnes of green waste per year from our green bins. The compost is used on the local authority’s parks and gardens, helping the whole of Chester to be a little bit greener.
