The Tuscarora Trail is challenging, the SCENERY IS MAGNIFICENT and it's a beautiful natural setting. Several caches have been placed along this trail in the Berkeley and Morgan County area.
There are now over 45 geocaches between Spruce Pine Hollow and Sleepy creek lake. I would estimate the round trip at over 20 miles. To make you hike enjoyable, do some research, decide how far you would like to hike, where you want to park or set up shuttles if your not hiking the entire trail, and come prepared (water and bug spray). The trail is in excellent condition. Terrain rating is based on hiking the entire trail, not this one cache.
The Tuscarora Trail runs about 250 miles, connecting the Appalachian Trail west of Harrisburg, Pa., to the Appalachian Trail south of Front Royal, Va., in Shenandoah National Park.
The Tuscarora/Great Eastern Trail relocation through beautiful Devils Nose Canyon, in Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area, has just recently open. The new Tuscarora Trail runs from Spruce Pine Hollow Road thru the Devils Nose Area to Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area. Hiking from Spruce Pine Hollow to the Devil’s Nose Parking Area is approximately 3.5 miles. You will experience a total elevation change of about 600 Ft.

The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC) has been working on the relocation for (4) four years. Improvements will continue during 2011. A new bridge over Meadow Branch is planned for later in the year.
Many thanks to the PATC for their tireless efforts to improve this trail.
The trail consists of painted BLUE blazes on trees. Watch carefully you don't miss a turn. Turns are marked with double blue blazes.
If you are entering from Spruce Pine Hollow parking area follow the white blazed trail from the south side of the Park a short distance to the Tuscarora Trail along the Meadow Branch creek. The Tuscarora Trail heading south immediately crosses the creek.
The trail climbs steadily through one of Morgan County’s most beautiful spruce forests and continues uphill along some dirt roads and past a few houses. A very steep climb up the northern end of Sleepy Creek Mountain follows. From here the trail enters Sleepy Creek WMA and follows the crest of Sleepy Creek Mountain along the Berkeley/Morgan county line until it descends the eastern slope to the next access point at Sleepy Creek Lake.
There are many interesting features along the new trail. Hiking from the north, there is a beautiful view of the Tuscarora Mountain to the north in Pennsylvania, interesting rock formations as well as cliff views of Meadow Branch in the canyon below, and the interesting change from deciduous trees with mountain laurel (May blooms) to hemlocks and rhododendron (June blooms) when descending into the cooler Devils Nose Canyon. The white- blazed Fisherman’s Trail leads into a less accessible area should you wish to spend more time in the canyon.
