Geocache Description:

I’m introducing this series of caches, called Minong: Pleasant Valley, to introduce everyone to the wonderful Minong area of northern Wisconsin.

Skiing is a winter outdoor activity brought to the Minong area by the Totogatic Ski Trail. Part of Washburn County forest land, the ski trail offers four loops from 3.3 to 8.6 kilometers at an intermediate level. The trails were developed by WWC crews in 1987 and include gently rolling hills wooded with black spruce in lower bog areas. While you’re here, be sure to check out the other 5 caches within the trail system.

The Totogatic name comes from the nearby Totogatic River, the Namekagon’s largest tributary. Totogatic, as you might guess, is an Ojibwa word meaning “soft or dancing bog” for the many lowlands that the river flows through, most of which are now covered by area flowages, providing fishing and other water recreational activities. To learn more about the Totogatic River, check out the attached link. P.S. if you want to come across as a local, pronounce it “Togatic” :)

Placed with permission of Washburn County Forest.
