Geocache Description:

Okains Bay is on Banks Peninsula, near Christchurch, New Zealand, and well worth a visit for its history and pleasant beach.

The cache is hidden in the schoolyard (of the restored, historic Okains Bay schoolhouse). Note this is a historic site only; not a working school.

You are looking for a 500ml camo painted container. Please replace the lid carefully.

4/10/16. Sadly, the tree this cache was hidden in was knocked over in a storm so we've had to close this cache.

On the main road to the beach, campgrounds and historic wharf, there is a cluster of interesting historic buildings: the general store and Post Office (1873), St John's Church (1863), the library (1860), and the restored schoolhouse (1872). Here you can also see the impressive Maori war canoes that are used on ceremonial occasions, including Waitangi Day commemorations (the day New Zealanders remember the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between the native Maori and European colonists in 1840). Also of interest here is the museum. It has a very good website at www.okainsbaymuseum.co.nz.
