The gum trees have been an icon for Flaxmere since the birth of Flaxmere. The large block of land near the centre of Flaxmere has now been sold by the council for a new housing development. Over the past year the trees are slowly being cut down. This cache will only be alive until the last tree has been cut down. Due to the drop in demand for housing in Flaxmere the trees have been able to survive for a little while longer. This is your last chance to say goodbye to Flaxmere's icon.
As a child I attended Flaxmere Primary School and each year as a class project we came to visit the trees and watch the enormous caterpillars. The high school backs onto this land and many years of young lovers relationships we made wondering through the trees. In the 80's a fitness track with an obstacle course was made among the trees and Friday night Flaxmere families would join together for fun and exercise. Later in the 80's a BMX track was also made and Flaxmere held regular large events for the locals to compete drawing national attention to the area. This piece of history is about to be lost, come and say goodbye.
To be able to log your visit you will need to sign the log book located in a green nano. If you have any memories from this area please also log these.
