Where this earth cache will take you is a
beautiful outlet with a view of the North Saskatchewan River. That
is not exactly what you’re looking for to log this cache. For
this cache you will have to learn a little bit about
Erosion.
Erosion is the process of weathering and
transport of solids (sediment, soil, rock and other particles) in
the natural environment or their source and deposits them
elsewhere. It usually occurs due to transport by wind, water, or
ice; by down-slope creep of soil and other material under the force
of gravity; or by living organisms, such as burrowing animals, in
the case of bioerosion.
Erosion is a natural process, but it has
been increased dramatically by human land use, especially
industrial agriculture, deforestation, and urban sprawl. Land that
is used for industrial agriculture generally experiences a
significant greater rate of erosion than that of land under natural
vegetation, or land used for sustainable agricultural practices.
This is particularly true if tillage is used, which reduces
vegetation cover on the surface of the soil and disturbs both soil
structure and plant roots that would otherwise hold the soil in
place. However, improved land use practices can limit erosion,
using techniques such as terrace-building, conservation tillage
practices, and tree planting.
When you arrive at this site you will come across layers of
sedimentary rock that have been whithered away. There are layers of
sandstone and regular dirt. If you visit this sight you will behold
one of the most interesting sites of weathering and erosion
anywhere near Rocky Mountain House.
If you drive down the road there is an outlet you can drive off
(unless you have a car like a Camry) You will arrive at a pebble
beach which has a vast view of the cliffs.
There are basically 4 different categories of erosion. They are
the following.
Gravity – The downfall of rocks called a
“rockslide” to diminish layers of earth.
Ice – Two different
types of Ice Erosion, which are Glaciers and Frost
Wedging.
Water
– Rivers, lakes, and oceans, scratch against ground and
diminishes rocks and soil.
Wind – Wind moves dust around and
erodes arid places such as deserts.
LOGGING
REQUIREMENTS
1. Go
to posted Coordinates and email me approximately how high up the
eroded cliffs are above the river.
2. Also
Email me which of the above types of erosion most likely occurred
on these cliffs.
3.
Lastly Please post a photo of yourself and/OR your GPS with the
cliffs in behind.
AND! If you want, post why you would NOT want to live in those
houses above the river!
