Geocache Description:

The site of the last hanging in New Mexico and the graves of 2 of the convicted murderers.

NOTE: THE ORIGINAL COORDS HAVE BEEN CHANGED SEE LONG DESCRIPTION

In September of 1921 five men entered the store owned by Mr. Mrs. A.J. Coury in Duran in eastern Torrance County. When Mr. Coury went to get a drink of water for one of the bandits, the bandits shot him. Mrs Coury struggled with the bandits while her son pelted him with canned goods.

Four of the five robbers were captured and convicted of first degree murder. One of the four was given a reprieve. The other three were hung on a gallows in the jail yard behind the court house on the west side of the 1st stage property at N 34 45.577 W 106 03 770. This was the last legal hanging in New Mexico.

This is the first of 5 stages. The other stages are at Estancia Cemetery. The only stage that has a container is at the last stage where the log is located. Please be considerate and respect the families that you find there.

The 2nd stage is at N 34 44.xxx W 106 04.xxx. To determine the coords of the 2nd stage subtract 47 and add 83 from the latitude and longitude of the gallows respectively.

The 3rd stage is at N 34 44,xxx W 106 04 xxx. Subtract 125 from the last three digits off the longitude of the 2nd stage to determine the last three digits of longitude of the this stage. Subtract 66 from the last three digits of the latitude to determine the last three digits of latitude on the 3rd stage. This stage is connected with a local fireman who was killed by a drunk driver.

The murderers graves are at N 34 44.xxx W 106 04.xxx. (no log) Subtract 24 from the last three digits of longitude at stage 3 to determine the last three digits of longitude for the graves. Subtract 289 from the last three digits of Stage 3 longitude to determine the last 3 digits of latitude at the murderers graves

The cache container is located away from all graves. N 34 44.xxx W 106 4.xxx Add 66 to the last 2 digits of the earlier date at stage 3 and add 433 to the last 2 digits of the later date to determine the last 3 digits of longitude and latitude respectively. The container is large enough for a couple trackables.

I am asking you do some geokarma and Cache In Trash Out. Pick up trash on the way so you will not be mistaken for a zombie. If you add your trash photo to mine I can show the townsfolk if the question of who are these strange people comes up. Also a good cover story if you are made. I picked up a trash bag full of old plastic flowers, beer cans, etc. in a couple of minutes.

All kinds of interesting tombstones and graves out here. Post a photo if you feel it would be appropriate but be respectful.

This is rattlesnake country although I have not seen any at the cemetery.
