John Murphy was born in 1893 in Portsoy, Banff, Scotland, and immigrated to Canada in 1911. In 1915 he came to Gifford, where he met Kathleen Conroy, to work on the James farm on Townshipline Road. Kathleen was born in 1897 in Matsqui. John and Kathleen were married May 13, 1919.

The Murphys purchased 40 acres on the southeast corner of what are now Downes Rd and Murphy St, where in 1921 they built a house on a "hog's back" that ran east and west across the centre of the property. From this vantage point there are views of Grouse Mountain, Mt. Robbie Reid, and Mt. Judge Howie on the north, Mt. Cheam on the east, Mt. Baker on the south, and the San Juan Islands on the southwest. One can imagine the young couple taking in this panorama before construction of their home. The Murphys lived on this property all their married life, raising four children, John Alexander ("Spud"), Kathleen, Elspeth, and Annie.

Along with his own mixed farming, John Murphy worked for local farmers, and did some contracting and road building. John and Kathleen Murphy were involved in local fairs, ploughing societies, St. Andrews and Caledonian Society, and the Liberal Party; and Kathleen was also a member of the Clayburn Women's Institute. They enjoyed dance parties at the Masonic Hall, Gazley Hall, Matsqui Village Hall, and the Gifford Village Hall.

Kathleen died 23 March 1983, and John, 16 July 1985.
