Geocache Description:

CONGRATULATIONS TO neoc1 ON BEING THE FTF

Bermuda began as two large volcanic blasts 45 and 33 million years ago. A Sea-Mount was formed in the newly formed Atlantic Ocean as Europe and North America distanced themselves from each other. Bermuda became a large sandy island on top of this sea-mount, and over time and pressure those sand dunes cemented into sandstone and limestone deposits that the present islands of Bermuda are based upon. The limestones of Bermuda end 30m below sea level where they meet up again with the igneous rocks of the Volcanic sea-mount.

About one million years ago during an ice age, the sea level was nearly 125m below its present levels, and Bermuda was 20 times its present area. A large body of ground water was present, and made for ideal conditions for cave formation. As sea levels rose again, these caves were drowned out as salt water displaced the freshwater deposits. Salt water erosion of the caves walls continues to cause collapses in the caves, and the formation of irregular chambers and fissure entrances that make Bermudas cave systems so scenic.

Integrated passageways and connected cave systems through the belly of Bermudas Limestone connect seemingly isolated saltwater pools. The Labarynth like passageways are only accessible by divers, and mostly exist between 17 and 20 meters below sea level. Caves above sea level are the result of collapses in the system below, and are characterized as short chambers rather then winding tunnels that can be seen in the caverns depths.

Impressive stalactites and stalagmites are formed over hundred of thousands of years by dripping water seeping through the roof of the cavern into air filled pockets of the caves. These structures are the mineral deposits left from the dripping water as it either creeps from the ceiling, or drips to the floor. Stalactites and Stalagmites fill not only the air filled chambers, but the cave system below, showing that these caverns were once above sea level for considerable amounts of time.

TO LOG THIS FIND

  1. Choose a Stalactite (hanging from the ceiling) - and estimate its height (measuring in meters will make the math below easier!). Add this estimate to the found log!
  2. Given the rate of growth of 0.005 mm per year as estimated by David Milne Home in 1864, determine the approximate age of your stalactite. Add this estimate to your found log!
  3. Try and photograph the Stactite you chose as best you can and add this photo to the found log and EMAIL ME the answers to the questions.
