This lake used to be called LONG LAKE. SHAGAWA is the Ojibwa word for LONG.

Since the time of the nomads, people have been traversing this land and settling here. The canoe was the preferred mode of transportation to the early people of this shore. The Ojibwas were settling here on the shores of this lake in the 1400's.Next,the French voyageurs paddled to these shores in the 1600's looking for fur trade. In the mid-1800's, the mineral explorers paddled here from the eastern waters and found a rich lode of iron ore on these shores. In the late 1800's, the timber cruisers and the lumbermen came and cut down the forests to feed the need for lumber in the Eastern USA.

Today we have tourists, who come to town in autos, but once they are here, many prefer to travel to destinations on our waterways in canoes. Some use canoes built of birchbark as the Ojibwa used, others use modern, ultra-lite fiber canoes. There is still mining and mining exploration taking place. There is lumbering and trapping - both within government guidelines so as not to deplete the natural resources. The area has always welcomed people of diverse backgrounds and interests, and continues to do so.

If you come by water or walk off the path towards the lake you will have a couple of clearings that offer a beautiful scenic view.
