Geocache Description:

If you follow tradition and visit graves of relatives either before or on Memorial Day, it brings you to a virtual history book. Take the time to enjoy some of the history which will be open to you.

While visiting some of my relatives for the 2010 Memorial Day celebration, I did a little exploring. This cache will bring you to a unique location. Please take time to learn a little more about this war.

This cache has been placed with the Permission of Brewer City Officials! It is in a cemetery - NO caching before 7AM or 1/2 Hour After Dark (access to cemeteries is regulated by Maine State Law) - Be Respectful - Stay on the roads with your vehicle and Use Stealth if Muggles are near so the cache will not be compromised.

This cache is a staight forward hide - contained in a Hide-A-Key. Please, as always replace so it can not be seen. The log is in a baggie - Bring Your Own Writing Instrument!!!! - Sign The Log!!!!

There is a traveling trackable Geocoin to move along (no need to replace with a moving trackable - but if you have a small one it would be nice). If you take the trackable, please log it and place it in another cache.

This is a perfect place to trade off pathtags if you are so inclined. That will be about the best you can do for swag. Congradulations to Mainiac1957 for the FTF (and correcting the coords which I apparently typed wrong - sorry)!

The rest of the description is some history - read on or skip it - it's up to you. But if you are inclined to read it - you may find it interesting.

The War of 1861-5 or The American Civil War - Also known as the War Between the States as well as several other names. According to Wikipedia, Eleven Southern slave states declared their secession from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America, also known as "the Confederacy". Led by Jefferson Davis, they fought against the United States (the Union), which was supported by all the free states and the five border slave states.

The Civil War occurred just forty-nine years after Brewer became a town of its own. The land of Brewer, Eddington and Holden had originally all been part of Orrington which was founded in 1788. Many of the Brewer townspeople had deep roots in Orrington. There was a long history of military service to our county starting with the Revolutionary War.

So when the Civil War started, it is not surprising Brewer men went to war. The monument near the cache is a reminder ~ our Freedom is not free. The servicemen (sorry - all men back then) seem to be listed in groups with some officers first. Perhaps some folks could shed more light on this.

Since this is a memorial cache, I will those named on the stone,
W side is the dedication; S side - LTC Daniel Sargent, Cpt Billings Brastow, Asst. Eng. Simeon Smith Jr. USN, Sgt Cyrus Swett, Cpl. Jesse S. Blake, Alanson G.Annis, Franklin C.
