Geocache Description:

You are looking for a magnetic nano located in an area frequented by muggles. Stealth is required and you’ll need to bring a writing utensil with you (and maybe a pair of tweezers, just to be on the safe side!).

A bit of history combined with geocaching in Evanston! I’ve always especially enjoyed the caches that are hidden in historic locations, or combine with it some history that teaches the cacher about the area they are searching. Hope you all enjoy this one as well.

Near this general location was one of the first buildings in Evanston’s early days. From the Postcard History Series: Evanston book, by Mimi Peterson: “Major Edward H. Mulford (1794-1878) came to the frontier town in 1835. For $60, he purchased a tract of land north of the Indian Boundary Line along (old) Green Bay Road, currently Ridge Avenue, between what would become Oakton and Howard Streets in the modern-day Evanston. In order to ensure his claim, he built a simple log cabin near the current site of St. Francis Hospital. Later he purchased more land and built a tavern across the street from the cabin, which was known as Ten-Mile House. Major Mulford was the first justice of the peace in Cook County, and the tavern often served as a courthouse. The tavern also served as the first post office … and mail arrived just once a week via stagecoach.”

Experienced geocachers shouldn’t have much difficulty finding the cache, as it’s a common mode of hide. Using the following clues should help:

Muggles walk and drive by me on a frequent basis,
Unaware of my existence, you’d think I was an oasis.
Yet I don’t move unless I am found by one of you,
Just waiting here for the find and offering you this clue.

I reside upon something that can often save lives,
If people pay attention to instructions as they drive.
Hidden away, too, from those who await transport,
But don’t be fooled, I’m not in a shelter of any sort.

You’ll be unable to find me if you look straight ahead,
But from my vantage point I can see something that is red.
So flex a bit, look where you don’t expect and be prepared,
To reach your hand into a place that shouldn’t make you scared.

Update: Congratulations to GeoVern and Hogan843 for their co-FTF at 19:57 on 25 May 2010!!
