Geocache Description:

Here’s another event cache disguised as an nature excursion. Enjoy a short hike to the Stony Brook where particpants will launch small, homemade "stick boats" that will slowly make there way to the sea.

Date: Saturday, June 26, 1:30 - 3:00 PM

Place: Meet at the Buttinger Nature Center

Bring: One small homemade "stick boat" as described below; snacks and cold water for a refreshment break on the banks of the Brook

Wear: Stream shoes

Join us for this hike on the Reserve of the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association. Naturalist and Education Director of the Watershed Association (Ham Hoagies) will provide an insider’s view of the Stony Brook and its watershed. At the Brook, participants can launch their homemade rustic crafts where they will make their slow journey toward the sea. Enjoy other streamside activities - finding crayfish and salamanders, rock skipping, and bring a snack. Plan to spend some time before or after to search for other area caches including some new ones to be activated immediately prior to this event. PLEASE BRING A NEWBIE friend on the hike and share the joy! The Nature Center is a good place to stock up on fresh, fun swag.

What about your boat? This is simple – remember racing stick boats down your local stream in your childhood? Here are a few guidelines that will put all on an even playing field and maintain a friendly relationship with the environment. All vessels should be homemade from natural found material. Because of shallow water levels, it is recommended that boats should not exceed one foot in length or width. Smaller may be better. Sticks can be held together with cotton thread. Seed pods, feathers, flowers, and other natural items make great decorations. A prize will be awarded for the maker of the "Best Boat" as determined by a vote of all participants.
