Geocache Description:


Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) was a German poet, philosopher, historian, and playwright. He was a universal genius whose dramatic writings, poetry, philosophy, and historical works gave eloquent voice to the themes of justice and human freedom.

Schiller wrote the poem An die Freude (To Joy) in 1785 as a celebration of the brotherhood of man and it became the anthem of the Council of Europe and the European Union. Melody comes from Ludwig van Beethoven`s final movement of his Ninth Symphony (completed in 1824), a choral symphony for orchestra, four solo voices, and choir.

Schiller was very popular in Baltic states. When first memorial in his birthland was set up in 1830, then in Estonia, there were already two of them in honour of great poet. In 1805 was probably the world's first memorial to Friedrich Schiller set up in Helme and the second monument - which is the oldest one in the world preserved until today - was erected in 1813 on the Puhtu Peninsula.

[EST] Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) oli silmapaistvamaid saksa poeete ja draamakirjanikke, kelle "Ood rõõmule" on tänapäeval saanud ühendatud Euroopa hümniks. Meloodia pärineb Ludwig van Beethoveni 1823. aastal loodud 9. sümfooniast. Schiller ülistas oma teostes vabadust ja Inimese parimaid omadusi, mõistis hukka türanniat ja alatust, mis on talle toonud koguni «inimkonna õilsa advokaadi» hüüdnime. Schilleri-vaimustust Baltimaades märgib see, et kui poeedi sünnimaal püstitati esimene mälestussammas talle 1830. aastal, siis Eestis oli selleks ajaks jõutud neid püstitada juba kaks. 1805. Helmes ja 1813. aastal Puhtu mõisapargis.
