Brief History of the Roadside
Table
The concept of the roadside table began in 1918 in Iron County,
MI. What started as a effort to save the large native hardwoods
along the roadside as a "living forest memorial", soon transformed
into an idea adopted across the country. Herb Larson came up with
the idea after being chased out of several spots in Wisconsin lake
resorts for trying to have a cookout. Fearing this problem would
soon befall the UP, Larson came up with the idea of putting picnic
tables and grills in the areas where these "living forest
memorials" had been placed.
Many of these tables in Michigan are dedicated to an individual.
This particular park has been dedicated to several individuals over
the years. Currently this park honors Glenn Horton. Who was he and
who are the others this park has been dedicated to in the past?
Well that sounds like a good idea for another cache in this nice
park, which will be coming soon.
