Geocache Description:

West Virginia has a long history of coal minning. Many families have relatives that are or once were miners. Both of my grandfathers and one great grandfather and one great great grandfather mined the holes in WV for the black fuel. My grand father was killed in a slate fall in a mine near Cabin Creek when my dad was five years old. As was the company way, my grandmother and her five children (aged 9, 7, 5, 3, 1) were evicted from the company housing and cast out into the world on their own.

Granddad was buried in Slaughter Creek Cemetery, on the side of a hill, and I do mean a hill, as you will find out going for this cache. There was no money for a headstone until the VFW provided one honoring his military service during WWI. The cemetery holds some 600 souls, including several miners and families in small groups. You will not be able to see much of this cemetery unless you want to wander through waist high grass and brush. This old cemetery is not maintained except for the main trails, before Memorial Day, and some family plots.

Coal miners have given much to our great state in the form of energy that was dug with their muscle and sweat. And we as a society sometimes forget what they and their families have sacrificed for our bennefit. So as you go after this cache, say thank you to Charlie and all the other miners that have provided a better way of life for us and to he and others for serving in the Armed Forces and protecting our Freedom.

Parking is available off Little Creek Road at N 38 11.527 W 081 30.114. "PLEASE DO NOT CROSS THE OLD BRIDGE, IT IS UNSAFE"Cross the creek about 50 feet downstream of the bridge and follow main trail up the hill to the left until the second switch back. At the second switch back, N 38 11.542 W 081 30. 216, turn sharply right and continue up the mowed trail.

You are looking for a decon container. "PLEASE SNAP ALL 4 CORNERS OF THE CONTAINER TO KEEP IT WATER TIGHT".

Congrats to The Taylor's for the FTF!!!
