Geocache Description:

Fourth in the Oregon History Lesson series and eleventh in the I Hate I-5 series spanning all three west coast states.

This cache is included in both series due to it's location being one of historical significance and it's proximity to I-5. While placed mere yards from our beloved Interstate 5 near central western Oregon, this cache is NOT located at a highway Rest Area. Although easy to get to, you would be advised to check your roadmap and plan your route of attack depending upon your direction of travel along I-5.

This cache celebrates the first westward crossing of the McKenzie River by a white woman. Assisted by three friendly Indians, Mrs. Armitage and her husband crossed the river in their covered wagon in 1857 and became some of the first settlers of the Willamette Valley.

I suggest you take a leisurely stroll across the footbridge and read details of the crossing which can be found on a plaque bolted onto the SE corner of the automobile bridge, directly opposite the stairway which leads down to the riverside park.

NOTE: Vertigo sufferers may want to refrain from hunting this cache.
