Foxey’s Hangout”, a local landmark on the Mornington Peninsula. A locally well known intersection with a cute history.
“”Foxey’s Hangout”, a local landmark on the Mornington Peninsula was begun during the 1930’s close to land belonging to the Downard Family. The old dread tree with a wooden fox hanging from a branch still causes interest more than 70 years later, and there would be debate about its origin, who named it, and who hung the first fox on it. The suggestion that it was and Aboriginal scared site has been discredited. A member or the Downard Family believes it began when Phillip Johnson, a part Aboriginal trapper from Tasmania, and local trapper, Lou Connell descendant of local pioneers, were working for the Downards. Trying to outdo each other as fox-trappers, they hung their skinned catches on that tree. Other people added to the display with more foxes, as well as dead snake and Ravens.” – Mt Martha, Lands and People. Winty Calder The old hand made signs have been souvenired over the years, today to mark the history of the area, the local residents have replaced the foxes with metal and wooden caricatures. **We are reliably informed that the co-ords are closer to S 38 18.750 E 145 05.143 My Garmin must be having a bad day** Cache replaced today 23/5/2012. new co-ords S 38 18.754 E 145 05.139. **Vicroads in their infinite wisdom have removed the tree AND destroyed the icons of foxes – But they did replace the cache - The cache has now (22/05/11) been relocated less than 2 metres from where the old tree, was so there is no need to change the co-ords. I’m sure I have something in the shed that I can remake the foxes – watch this space!**
