Adam Miller (Mueller) is recognized as the first permanent white settler in the Shenandoah Valley. He emigrated from Schriesheim, Germany to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, then in 1727 to the Shenandoah Valley; his year of settlement is confirmed in a 1742 naturalization proclamation by Governor Gooch. The land which Miller lived on contained the spring known as Bear Lithia Spring. Miller served in Lt. Bingaman's Company during the French and Indian War. He lived on his property in Rockingham County until his death in 1783.
