Geocache Description:

The cache is a small lock and lock container.

This area was once widely used for mining shale to produce paraffin oil. The resulting waste shale was piled up in bings, some of which can still be seen around Whitburn, Bathgate and other parts of the central belt of Scotland.
It is best to stay on the paths around here as some of the drop offs can be quite sudden. Some areas can be very muddy and slippery, and most routes to the caches would probably not be suitable for a wheelchair.
Parking is available at N55 52 780 W003 28 468. Watch the busy road, and the nearby speed camera.
(Do not try to “follow the arrow” to GC269DK from here – read Hobgoblinkiteflyers log to see why.)
From the car park follow the paths (collect GC291W4 and GC291X4 on the way?) to the west.
At N55 52.698 W003 28.840 heading west take the less obvious path to the left. (Tick off Badger’s View on the way past?)
There is a right turn at N55 52.650 W003 29 025 which will take you back to the old path.
A further right turn at N55 52.685 W003 29.048 will take you to where the bridge used to be. Take care as it can get very slippery when wet around here. The cache is nearby the path. Lots of cyclists and dog walkers around here, so take care when replacing the cache.

Cache placed with the kind permission of the wardens of Almondell & Calderwood Country Park.
