Geocache Description:

Cache container is a small water bottle. Log only - please bring own writing implement. TEMPORARY NOTE (HOPEFULLY) The roadsign that the title refers to has fallen down due to rusting pole and high winds, so is not so easy to spot from GZ.

This area was once widely used for mining shale to produce paraffin oil. The resulting waste shale was piled up in bings, some of which can still be seen around Whitburn, Bathgate and other parts of the central belt of Scotland. I have added this cache to offer a safe-ish path to some other caches in the area. It is best to stay on the paths around here as some of the drop offs can be quite sudden. Some areas can be very muddy and slippery, and most routes to the caches would probably not be suitable for a wheelchair. Parking is available down the hill a bit, or there is a car park at N55 52 780 W003 28 468. Watch the busy road, and the nearby speed camera. (Do not try to “follow the arrow” to GC269DK from here – read Hobgoblinkiteflyers log to see why.) This can be a quick cache and dash, or part of a small string if more time is available. I have not seen any badgers round here, but obviously someone has. There is a wide variety of wildlife in the area – and lots of cyclists and dog walkers. Be circumspect. Cache placed with the kind permission of the wardens of Almondell & Calderwood Country Park.
