This is a two-stage cache. The starting point (an easy park-and-grab) is located at the endpoint of the Sycamore Memorial Day Parade. The coordinates within lead you to an ammo can that is located in another part of Elmwood Cemetery. Hours are 8:00 AM to dusk. Caches are placed with the permission of the caretaker.
Reaching the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America requires years of dedication and hard work. In addition to 21 required merit badges, each Scout must complete a project that, on average, requires 167 service hours. This cache is part of a nationwide Geocaching series called "Cache to Eagle," which showcases these special contributions.
In 1981, the City of Sycamore considered ending their community observance of Memorial Day, including the parade because no volunteers could be found to organize the event. My project was to reorganize and revitalize this observance.
Highlights were writing lesson plans with the Sycamore School District, having student artwork fill downtown merchant's store windows, contacting community organizations, coordinating emergency services, and producing a marching band and honor guard competition.
This cache is one of many in the "Cache-to-Eagle" series that highlight a tenant of Scouting: Service. Over its first 100 years, Scouting provides millions of hours of service to communities across America.
